Extracting data uniquely generated within selenium ide

Post by Mikey on Fri Mar 14, 2014 10:08 pm

Hiya.

I've got a issue that I need a little help with, I hope someone can.

Does anyone know if there is a way of extracting data from Selenium to something like Excel or Textpad.

I've created a suite of regression tests where the first thing I do is create a unique person using JS timestamp. This customer is then used for subsequent tests, currently I crudely echo the generated customer and put it into an Excel sheet and then paste that data in the required test.

What would be brilliant if I could have the data that I've created in the first test extracted to a file, this file could then be used to pick up the necessary data for a test where that customer is used again.

Any suggestions as to how I go about doing this?

Many thanks in advance.

Mikey

Is there any reason to not use that randomly generated person as a variable? If you did that, you could eliminate the use of Excel completely and keep everything within the tests. No manual interaction would be needed.

Hiya, thanks for responding.

The data is used for a series of tests which require manual steps, such as batch processing, ect.

As well as that the tests cover different areas but are all linked.

It's probably helpful if I use specifics:

I have tests that set up a variety of charities (created using the time stamp)
The charities are then used to create fundraisers against the charities given
The fundraisers (and charities) then have donations against them.
The charities can then see reports where fundraising and donations have been made to them.

So I can't really use the variable within the test in Selenium as I will create the charities in the first phase, then create all fundraisers, then donate, then update fundraisers, ect.

Make sense?  Very Happy

Ahh I gotcha. Unfortunately, there isn't anything built in to Selenium IDE to handle what you described. It is possible to do with custom js work.

So are you creating all the charities at once then all the fundraisers and associating them to charaties? Could you create a charity then create fundraisers to associate to that charity? That way you have kind of a serial flow of succession. The batch part would probably still be a problem though, right?

This would be something I would suggest using WebDriver for.

I could create the tests in a linear way but there is a bit of cross over, where fundraisers will fund raise against more than 1 created charity.

I think I'll go the webdriver way route.

Thanks for your help
