Starting with Selenium, what is Selenium?

Hey Community,
this would be a few stupid questions but we have to do a presentation about Selenium in School.
But after our first research it isn't completely clear what is Selenium used for. Of course, it is a testing suite with testing automation for Web Apllication, isn't it. But can you give me concrete examples, when to use Selenium and what bugs you can find?
Perhaps a bad example of a Web Application in the World wide web, which we can show at the beginning to motivate the audience and say: "With Selenium this wouldn't been happen, now we show what it does and how to use".
