QTP
QTP can be used for testing client server applications
QTP is limited to Internet Explorer on Windows.
QTP uses scripting language implemented on top of VB Script


Selenium
Only web applications can be tested using Selenium testing suite
Selenium supports following web browsers: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera or Konqueror on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux
Selenium test suite has the flexibility to use many languages like Java, .Net, Perl, PHP, Python, and Ruby.
Selenium 2.0



Boarland silk test
Silk Test can be used for testing client server applications
Silk Test is limited to Internet Explorer and firefox
SilkTest Classic uses the domain specific 4Test language for automation scripting. It is an object oriented language similar to C++

Thanks for explaining the difference - so essentially, only Selenium can be used for cross browser testing.

QTP can also be used for cross browser testing. Not sure for Silk Test though.

Very nice information and Selenium isĀ Open source & Portable while QTP is very Expensive.

The information on Silk Test is outdated. With the current version of Silk Test, Silk Test 17.5, you can record and replay tests on the following browsers:
Internet Explorer
Mozilla Firefox
Google Chrome
Microsoft Edge
Apple Safari (on MacOS and iOS)
Chrome for Android (on Android)

You can also record and replay tests against native mobile applications on Android and iOS.

You can also record and replay Selenium scripts by using Silk WebDriver.
